CHAMAN LAL FATHER OF GULSHAN KUMAR MURDERED BY POLICE IN 1992, SPEAKS OUT ABOUT THE COMPLETE ABSENCE OF JUSTICE IN INDIA .
Many people will have heard of Chaman Lal; an elderly, grieving father who has spent almost 25 years demanding justice for his son’s cold blooded murder at the hands of the police in 1992. Gulshan Kumar was Chaman Lal’s eldest son and main breadwinner, who earned a living by selling fruit and vegetables to the local villagers on his cart.
Gulshan Kumar had stood up for a family who’s daughter was being mistreated. This had not gone down well with the rival family and their supporters. So one of them had colluded with the Tarn Taran police and had Gulshan Kumar placed in police custody on the pretext that he was a member of the Sikh freedom fighters. For a whole month, Chaman Lal visited the police station everday, with a homemade lunch for his son, but they would not tell him anything. Until one day, the guard on duty told Chaman Lal “your son won’t be needing you lunches any longer”.
Since that day, Chaman Lal says he has not had a minutes peace. During his decades-long struggle to hold those guilty of Gulshan Kumars death to account; he has been bribed, blackmailed and threatened to drop his pursuit of justice. But, he has not waivered, Chaman Lal insists the Sikhs were not terrorists, it was the Indian Government and its agents who were wreaking terror across the country.
How many more fathers like Chaman Lal, have spent their lives chasing justice, but have breathed their last before seeing any? At the end of the meeting, Chaman Lal’s last words are; “Son, please be sure the entire Sikh panth is present when my funeral pyre is lit……”
