Controversial Ram Rahim has 3,000+ Murder and Other Cases Against him too

Besides getting convicted for rape on Friday, Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is facing further serious charges for murder, castration of his followers and other controversies, which have put him in the cross hairs of judiciary and various socio-religious outfits.

Controversies related to Dera head: Ranjit Singh murder case: Gurmeet Ram Rahim is facing charges for his alleged involvement in the July 2002 murder conspiracy of dera manager Ranjit Singh. Ranjit was allegedly murdered by dera head’s associates at his village in Kurukshetra district after he had distanced himself from the sect. He was suspected to have circulated the anonymous letters alleging sexual harassment of sadhvis (women disciples) inside the dera headquarters in Sirsa. The CBI is probing the case, which is pending before the special CBI court in Panchkula. Trial in the case is at its final stage.

Ram Chander Chatterpati murder case: The Sirsa-based journalist of a local newspaper was shot at on October 23, 2002. According to the CBI, he was murdered for publishing news about the illegal activities inside the dera headquarters in Sirsa. Dera head Gurmeet Ram Rahim was booked, along with three others, for his alleged involvement in the murder conspiracy. The case is also being probed by the CBI and is pending before the special CBI court in Panchkula. Trial in the case is also at its final stage.

Castration of followers: The controversial sect head is also facing the allegations of castration of his followers inside the dera headquarters. On December 23, 2014, the Punjab and Haryana high court had ordered the CBI to probe castration charges against him. The complainant in the case had claimed that he, along with around 400 sadhus (disciples) of dera, was allegedly castrated inside the dera with the hope that they would be able to achieve God through the process with the guidance of their guru. The case is being probed by the CBI.

Dress row: Gurmeet Ram Rahim also landed in a controversy in 2007 for wearing a dress similar to the one donned by the 10th Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh for which a case was also registered against him by the Bathinda police. Massive violence erupted thereafter in both Punjab and Haryana for several days. The Punjab government later withdrew the case in 2014.

Army advisory: Even the Indian Army had also issued an advisory in December 2010 about weapon training to activists of Dera Sacha Sauda at its headquarters in Sirsa. Taking cognizance of the advisory in December 2014, the Punjab and Haryana high court had issued a notice to the Haryana government and had sought details on the presence of illegal arms and ammunition and alleged weapon training inside the dera complex. The Haryana government, however, had given clean a chit to the dera head in the matter.
