Simranjit Singh Mann Approaches High Court Alleging Abduction by Police

Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann approached the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking direction to the state government to take action against the Amritsar deputy commissioner and senior superintendent of police (SSP) besides other police officials for “abducting him and misbehaving” with him.

His counsel Ranjan Lakhanpal said the petition is likely to come up for hearing next week.
It was submitted that after Sarbat Khalsa on November 10, Mann was picked up by the police from his New Amritsar house in the wee hours on November 15 despite the high court order that he be given a week’s notice before his arrest.

It was also submitted that his son, Iman Singh Mann, went to the deputy commissioner’s house and apprised him of the issue but no action was taken and his son and others were not even allowed to meet him. He was manhandled and let off only after bail bonds were furnished in the evening, it was said.

“Action of Amritsar police in abducting the petitioner, badly manhandling him and insulting him, arresting him under Sections 107/151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (arrest on apprehension of breach of peace and tranquillity) is wholly illegal, inhuman and against all basic human rights. This being the position, appropriate action is liable to be taken against the police of Amritsar district,” the petitioner said. The action has been sought against the deputy commissioner, SSP, and the SHO of Chheharta police station.
