Jathedar Ranbir Singh was born in December 1935 in the village of Thraj, district Faridhkot. He was one of 5 children, he had one sister and three brothers. Their father Sardar Kala Singh, was a farmer and during the Jaito Morcha he was sentenced to fourteen years in jail, of which he served five. Kala Singh was also a member of Sardar Bhagat Singh’s Naujwaan Sabha.

Ranbir Singh was blessed with Amrit at the young age of six. After he completed his basic education, he made a decision to join the army. He was a devout Gursikh who could recite many Bani’s by heart and in the army, he was placed in charge of religious duties. He married Rajwant Kaur and together they had two children, Daljeet Singh and Parmjeet Kaur. After completing twenty years of Army service, he took his pension and came to stay with Sant Kartar Singh Khalsa Jatha Bhindra Mehta. Sant Kartar Singh nominated Ranbir Singh as Jathedar of Gurdwara Mehta, where Jathedar Ranbir Singh donated his monthly pension; he also sold his tractor and trolley to further the seva that was required at Mehta.

On the day of Vaisakhi 13th April 1978, Jathedar Ranbir Singh joined over 125 other Singh’s to peacefully protest against a procession held in Amritsar by Nirankari Gurbachan and his cult who were openly disrespecting the Guru’s and their teachings. Led by Bhai Fauja Singh, Jathedar Ranbir Singh and the others were reciting Gurbani. Violence broke out when the Nirankari followers, who were armed with weapons and petrol bombs, attacked the unarmed Singhs. Along with 12 others, Jathedar Ranbir Singh a became Shaheed and around 75 Singh’s were wounded.
