Yesterday Paramjeet Singh was presented before a Portuguese Court in relation to his recent arrest at the instruction of Interpol who had issued a worldwide arrest warrant for him. Paramjeet Singh, who has been granted asylum in the UK, was enjoying a family holiday with his wife and four children when he was arrested in Portugal.
The Portuguese system has initiated this first step by requesting the Indian Government to present its case against Paramjeet Singh for extradition by 4th January.
The Portuguese system establishes a double deadline, which includes a first 18 days deadline followed by a second 22 days deadline. So, in total there is a maximum deadline of 40 days, at the end of which the request must be formally presented.
The Indian Government is seeking the extradition of Paramjeet Singh back to India where he is facing charges of murder and terrorist activities under the Unlawful Activities and Prevention Act. These are very worrying allegations as there is a high probability of torture, false charges which could lead to a possible death sentence, we only have to look at the way Prof Devinderpal Singh Bhullar was deported back to India from Germany, despite given assurances that no death penalty would be given or torture inflicted.
Founder of Sikh Relief, Balbir Singh Bains is also another prime example of how Indian Authorities will falsify and trump up charges against innocent men which led to a lengthy prison sentence before the case even made it to trial.
Sikh Relief recognizes and thanks the tireless efforts of the Sikh Council and Sikhs For Justice legal representative Gurpatwant Singh Pannu in this matter.
Sikh Relief has offered to provide any assistance to the Sikh Council and Paramjeet Singh’s legal council should they require it. Our thoughts and well wishes are with Paramjeet Singh and his family at this difficult time. via Sikh Organisation For Prisoners Welfare
