On 24th April 2016, Shiv Sena leader Durga Prasad Gupta was shot dead by two clean-shaven unidentified assailants in Khanna, Ludhiana district. Gupta, who was provided security by the Panjab Police, was alone when the attack took place near his office in Khanna. He died on the spot after being shot from close distance by the attackers who were on a motorcycle.

Panjab police have been harassing many Sikhs in relation to the attack, by continually raiding their homes and pulling them in for questioning. In the latest incident, Kashmir Singh from the village of Galwaddi, who has been in Nabha Jail since April awaiting trial in another case, was recalled in to police custody and questioned in the Durga Prasad murder case. In typical Panjab police fashion, Kashmir Singh has been charged with the murder, even though he was in custody at the time it was committed. Regardless of a persons innocence, or the lack of evidence or witnesses, Panjab police will often dump a number of cases on any one Sikh, in order to keep them locked into the slow-moving judicial system of India. Sikh Relief member Jaswinder Singh Anandpur is personally following Kashmir Singh’s case and is in regular contact with him and his family.

PLEASE NOTE: Kashmir Singh is under trial for the attack on Shiv Sena leader Harvinder Soni, who was involved in the removal of the turban of a Sikh in Gurdaspur during a peaceful protest in March 2012. Soni was among those booked in the case registered for unlawful gathering, rioting and armed with deadly weapons.
