The Shiv Sena are a far-right Hindu nationalist party who regularly stoke communal disharmony particularly with the Sikhs in Panjab. Over the years, there have been many incidents of provocation instigated by Shiv Sena against the Sikh youth. Many of you may recall the innocent life 18-year old Jaspal Singh of Chaur Sidhma lost in 2012 when police fired at peaceful protestors who had gathered after Shiv Sena activists had removed a Sikhs turban and set it alight. To this date, Jaspal Singh’s murder and the Shiv Sena’s actions remain unaddressed.
On 12 April 2015, Kashmir Singh a resident of Galwadi village, assaulted Shiv Sena leader Harvinder Soni who was injured by a gunshot. Kashmir Singh claimed responsibility and came forward when police arrived to arrest him. Yet, despite Kashmir Singh’s admission, Panjab Police saw it as a ‘green light’ to harass other innocent Sikhs and picked up both Inderpal Singh and Surinder Singh.
A further Sikh youth Gurjit Singh, son of Salvinder Singh Vadala, was also detained in relation to the same case. He has now been released on bail. Sikh Relief members, Jaswinder Singh Anandpur Sahib and Jaswinder Singh Rajpura, recently visited Gurjit Singh Vadala at home and provided moral and financial support as his family live by very modest means; his mother is a stroke patient needing regular care and treatment. Sikh Relief has also taken on the legal representation on behalf of Gurjit Singh and will pursue his case to a conclusion.
